Magi 2017 - The Journey Begins (Once Again!)

After a year hiatus, Hillside will again be presenting “Magi: The Journey Begins”.  For those of you who are new to Hillside, “Magi” is a Christmas musical, original to Hillside, that our church has prepared and presented to the community several different times.  It has proven to be a popular community event and, more importantly, is a great outreach tool for us, as it clearly communicates the Gospel message to all who experience it.

For Magi to be an effective production, it takes the energy and gifts of the entire church.  This is not just an opportunity for singers/actors/directors to minister – we will need everyone’s gifts. Magi in and of itself is not meant to do all the evangelistic work on its own; God will work through our hospitality and our conversations with friends and other guests who come. We want to lift up the name of Jesus Christ like a shining beacon to our community, and we’ll need your help to do so.  This letter marks our kick-off toward that goal.

Magi utilizes multiple casts and guides visitors on a journey through different scenes, set in different venues around the church. As you can recall (or imagine!), this takes a well-organized and well-supported effort by many people.  The massive job of presenting Magi becomes more manageable when split into teams.  The teams we need are as follows:

TEAM ONE: SCENE DIRECTORS

We utilize a team approach to direction, with five directors responsible for individual scenes. These scene directors will work with the director and the actors to make those scenes come alive. Directing and theater experience a plus, but not a requirement.

TEAM THREE: THE TECH CREW

We set up sound and lights at each of the 5 different sets, and so we need a lot of help in this area. We train people, so don’t be shy, even if you don’t have experience. Age 15 and older, please.

TEAM FIVE: FOOD

Guests are served drinks and snacks throughout the show, and also are served cookies and beverages at the end of the journey. We need preparers and servers. November 11th we will have a fun “cookie baking day” to prepare for the show.

TEAM TWO: THE CAST

We will have either two or three casts, depending on how many we can cast well. So there are many spots open – big parts and small parts, singing and non-singing parts, for ages 12 to 80+ – for all who would like to actually be in the show. Auditions will be held July 9th and August 13th.  You may come with a prepared song, or our accompanist will play a selection for you.  Please mark your preferred date on the enclosed response sheet, and you will be contacted to schedule an audition. If neither of those dates works with your summer schedule, please contact me at the church office to discuss alternatives.

TEAM FOUR: SETS

This team oversees the design, the building, the setting up, the dressing, and the taking down of all five sets. Art work, wood work, grunt work. This team’s got it all! Some of the sets from the past are reusable, so we don’t have to start from scratch!

TEAM SIX: COSTUMES

We need to assess our costume wardrobe. Some costumes need cleaning or repair. Some new costumes may need to be made. Some costumes will need to be tailored.

TEAM SEVEN: GETTING THE WORD OUT

Both at home and in the community we need to promote Magi in the most strategic way. Every year we make an attractive promotional poster. There are invitations and tickets to make. Advertising options need to be explored. Marketers, artists, and nuts and bolts help will be needed. Special groups need to be invited.

TEAM NINE: FOLLOW-UP

We need a small team to strategize the respectful ways that we will follow-up with the guests who visit us.

TEAM EIGHT: WELCOME

There is a critical need to manage the movement of our many guests on the performance nights. We need parking attendants, ticket table help, hosts that travel with each audience, errand runners, friendly greeters, people to manage the hospitality area. We want to give our guests a stress-free, smooth experience.

TEAM TEN: PRAYER

We need a team of people committed to regular and forceful intercession on behalf of this mission. We also want to call the church at large to pray, particularly for those we are inviting to come.

“Magi: The Journey Begins” will run December 8 - December 10 with approximately 20 shows. Rehearsals will begin September 11th and run most Monday nights through the fall.

Please take some time to pray through the various team opportunities. We want to work in community, and we want to spread the labor out far and wide. We invite you to fill out the response form below online or download a copy and return to the church office by July 2nd.

One final point: Start now and think about who you might like to invite to Magi. Be cultivating your friendship with that person, so that when December rolls around you will already have a lot of relational ground on which to pursue spiritual matters. The way we can all already begin to partner on this mission is by simply praying that God will take all of this, direct it, fill it with His Spirit, and anoint all of our work with joy and power. Let’s look forward expectantly to what God will do in us and through us as we undertake this mission!

In Anticipation,
